Optimism on Show at Subsea Tieback 2021

Lots of products and new technologies were on display at the recent Subsea Tieback forum and exhibition in Galveston, Texas. But most visible of all was the positivity and optimism for the future.

This year’s show theme was “piecing it all together” and after a difficult and disruptive couple of years globally, there was a confidence on the show floor that things were starting to fall back into place. Rising oil and gas prices and progress on projects held up by the pandemic meant the feel-good factor was back at the show.

The fallout from Hurricane Ida impacted attendee numbers from Louisiana, but with this year’s Subsea Tieback so close to Houston there was a healthy number representing Space City.

For Sandvik Materials Technology, Subsea Tieback 2021 was important for many reasons:

Return to Exhibitions

Subsea Tieback 2020 was the last event Sandvik Materials Technology’s Oil & Gas team exhibited at in person, so returning to face-to-face exhibitions at this year’s show was special. After more than a year working remotely and relying on conference calls, it was great to be back on the booth and networking, discussing solutions to operational challenges with our customers and how the pandemic has affected us all.

The effect of the pandemic on delaying projects, vessels and supplies, and organizational changes was a key conversation topic. However, there was a positive feeling that things are starting to turn for the better for oil and gas. Increasing opportunities in renewable energy for the subsea sector was another major talking point.

Umbilical Tubing

Also popular with the subsea crowd was our umbilical tubing, made from SAF 2507® super-duplex stainless steel, that combines high corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. With excellent resistance to seawater and marine environments, it is particularly well-suited for applications exposed to high stress in aggressive chloride-rich environments. Its excellent anti-corrosion, erosion, fatigue and mechanical properties makes it the perfect choice for dynamic umbilical tubing.

As a market leader in stainless steel umbilical tubing, we pride ourselves on having supplied more than 100 million meters (or 330 million feet) of umbilical tubes to major fabricators and oil companies in all offshore regions.

Most of those who visited our booth already knew our materials and capabilities well, but we were happy to answer lots of interesting questions about material grades, supplies, and size ranges from potential customers.

Control Line Calculator

Our big announcement was the launch of our new web-based control line calculator, which generated lots of interest from visitors to our booth. The control line calculator provides estimates of the highest permissible internal pressures for control lines of certain sizes and grades.

You can choose between three formulas, several outer diameters and wall thicknesses, the option of seamless or welded tubing, and the well temperature. Based on your inputs, the available material grades will be displayed along with their internal yield pressure (psi) and burst pressure (psi). You can update or change the parameters as many times as you like. The result of each calculation is presented as approximate maximum working pressure.

Listening and Learning

Subsea Tieback is always an excellent event for learning about the latest technologies, major project updates and project execution. As a materials supplier, it was valuable to understand the latest issues facing end-users – from high temperature to pressure, corrosion resistance, or material availability – and how we can deliver material-related solutions.

Despite the pandemic, this year’s show was well attended. With next year’s Subsea Tieback in March at the same venue in Galveston, we’re looking forward to an even bigger crowd at our booth. And with projects coming on stream all the time, we’re expecting even more positive conversations about the prospects for the rest of 2022.

At Sandvik Materials Technology, we’ve been providing trusted solutions to the oil and gas industry for more than 50 years. We’ve a successful record supporting the subsea sector around the world.
