Problems with erosion corrosion may occur if a material is exposed simultaneously to a corrosive solution and mechanical wear, mainly due to solid particles in the fluid. Increasing amounts of particles will reduce the tolerable flow rate.
High-alloy stainless steels can tolerate a flow rate of > 20 m/s, whereas copper and copper alloys are attacked at flow rates of 1 m/s.
