New Sandvik Mehsana Steel Mill Doubles Capacity in Asia Pacific

Earlier this year, Sandvik added a new cold finishing tube manufacturing line at its Mehsana mill, in Gujarat, western India. Created to meet the growing demand for special alloy tubes in India and Asia Pacific, the additional line doubles Mehsana’s cold working capacity to allow swifter delivery times across the region.

Enhanced product portfolios

The mill was originally built specifically for the production of heat exchanger tubing and other demanding industrial applications. Now in addition to heat exchangers, our clients are able to purchase advanced corrosion-resistant tube, pipe and hollows, which can be applied in process equipment in various industries, including petrochemical, oil and gas, chemical and fertilizer.

The expansion of our product portfolio through an enhanced cold pilgering process can create greater variety and quantity for our customers. The new cold working line focuses on tubes in austenitic, super austenites, duplex and nickel-based alloys, with an emphasis on straight or U-bent tubes for shell-and-tube heat exchangers.

Sustainable manufacturing

Sandvik maintains a highly integrated and sustainable manufacturing process, with tube products made from 84-percent recycled metal using efficient manufacturing processes. Driven by a ‘zero defects’ philosophy at the Mehsana mill, we ensure full traceability from melt to final tube, allowing customers to trace any product in every step of the production process back to the individual melt, heat and lot. This gives them full control over their product, empowering them to install or modify the material with full knowledge of its production history.

Featured products

A low-carbon version of Alloy 800 austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy. The grade is characterized by good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. The grade is used in, for example, steam generator tubing in nuclear stations (PWR) and various heat exchanger applications.

A nickel alloy characterized by very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride and sour (H2S/Cl-) environments and very good resistance to corrosion resistance in acidic media such as sulphuric acid.

An austenitic nickel-chromium-iron alloy characterized by very good resistance to carburization and nitrogen absorption and good structural stability at high temperatures. It has also good resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Sanicro® 625 is an austenitic nickel-chromium alloy characterized by:

  • Extremely good corrosion resistance in widely varying acidic and chloride containing environments
  • High strength
  • Excellent fabrication properties.

Sanicro® 625 can be used in a wide range of temperatures from -196°C to 815°C (-321°F to 1500°F). Typical uses include hydraulic and instrumentation systems, heat-exchangers and high-temperature applications. However, it should be noted that prolonged exposure to temperatures above 600°C (1100°F) may lead to embrittlement.
