Mill Update: Keeping our Chomutov Move on Course

Just two years ago, Sandvik Materials Technology (Sandvik) embarked on an ambitious plan to move some of its tube production operations from Sandviken, Sweden, to our site in Chomutov, Czech Republic.

We’re delighted and extremely proud that, despite the challenges and changes that have been faced due to the pandemic, the transition to Chomutov has carried on according to plan.

It has been a massive achievement, involving the movement of two tube mills and their machinery from Sandviken, enabling the expansion of our facilities in Chomutov to increase capabilities. Also, new machines have been installed for the production of additional grades, applications and products, enhancing Sandvik’s offering to clients.

This has all been delivered thanks to a strong project team, great team spirit, strong local ownership, and collaboration among everyone involved, underpinned by extremely good and robust planning from the outset.

The production unit in Chomutov, originally opened in 1994, has traditionally been focused on manufacturing umbilical tubing for the oil and gas industry. More recently, capabilities for heat exchanger tubes have been added, with production now running at 100%.

The final months of the project will see production capacity for hydraulic and instrumentation (H&I) tubing being finalized, with final touches, machine installation and site testing fully underway.

The expanded facility sets the standards for modern manufacture, bringing all production under one roof, enhancing capabilities and increasing material length range, flexibility, and diversity to deliver a strong and competitive product portfolio built upon a highly efficient production platform.

Materials to be manufactured at the site include recently launched Sanicro® 35, a unique, super-austenitic alloy, designed to bridge the property gaps between stainless steel grades and more expensive high nickel alloys, while other, higher-end grades, will also be produced for both heat exchanger and hydraulic and instrumentation tubing.

The transition not only brings stock availability closer to customers in mainland Europe but also strengthens our ability to support product delivery anywhere in the world.

New processes, machinery, and more efficient use of building space support Sandvik’s commitment to sustainable production.
