Q.1 What is SAF 2205™+?

We call it “Plus” because the latest member of our SAF 2205™ bar family is pre-engineered to comply with the toughest demands in the oil and gas industry. It is tested to withstand extreme corrosion and is certified to meet the latest subsea requirements, such as avoiding hard-to-detect pitting corrosion or other types of general corrosion in pumps and valves.

SAF 2205™+ is a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel with excellent material cleanliness, making it a perfect choice for highly demanding applications. The alloy is our latest grade of stainless steel that focuses on meeting current and future end-user specifications.

Q.2 How is SAF 2205™+ different?

Not long ago, meeting ASTM, EN-norm, and NORSOK standards was the critical benchmark; however, times have changed, and requirements have become even stricter. The ever-increasing list of new standards and customer demands includes increased reduction ratio, tighter chemical specifications, and extra testing, just to name a few. In addition to meeting common oil and gas standards, our clients now face additional testing requirements to certify the material for aggressive conditions.

Unlike other stainless steels, SAF 2205™+ is pe-approved to the latest IOGP S-563 and ISO 17781 standards. For our clients in the oil and gas industry, this translates into a vital time saver because they won’t have to wait weeks to comply with new tests.

Q.3 What are the benefits and features of SAF 2205™+?

SAF 2205™+ is a super-clean material with enhanced pitting corrosion resistance, outstanding mechanical properties (up to 50% higher impact strength level than Sanmac® 2205), and better weldability. It features a reduced level of sulphur and phosphorous, with even tighter chemical tolerances. This means the bar is optimized to withstand corrosion further, and its chemical composition is better suited for aggressive subsea environments. It comes with the latest certification required for demanding oil and gas components, making this material pre-certified and ready to go.

All bars are PMI-tested and ink-marked to ensure full traceability. The 3.1 certificate provides all information on the material’s production and testing, giving customers full peace of mind.

Q.4 What feedback do you receive from existing customers?

The feedback has been positive, especially from our customers in the pump and valve business, connected to the oil and gas industry. They can see the benefit in SAF 2205™+ due to the extensive testing we have put into it. It complies with the new industry standards and surpasses them by including features such as a minimum 4:1 reduction ratio for all sizes and verifies the austinite spacing. These features are not required in the standards but can be found in many end-user specifications. Using SAF 2205™+ reduces the risk of upgrading material components and has the potential to decrease the lead-time for manufacturing. This is especially important as many orders of new pumps are one-offs and short-term.
