Sandvik's Material Experts: Meet the Team – Renata Mota

Meet the team behind our Tube division. In our new series, we’ll introduce the faces behind this team and hear their insights on the tubing industry.

In our latest blog, we caught up with Renata Mota, an Application Engineer in Brazil. When she was an intern, Renata was awarded for her work on a case study of high-temperature performance stainless steel. In the past month, Renata joined Sandvik Materials Technology as a full-time employee where her skills will be developed further to support her career.

Q - Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

A – I graduated in 2021 from the University Center of FEI in Brazil. At university, I participated in three undergraduate research projects and a student competition hosted by the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering. It was definitely a great experience, however, I realized that moving from an academic setting to an industry setting would be extraordinary as I now get the opportunity to put the theory into practice.

During my time at university, I had the opportunity to join Sandvik Materials Technology as an intern in October 2019. Now I’m a full-time application engineer, dedicated to seamless stainless steel tubes and special alloys. We support different demanding industries such as oil and gas, refineries, and fertilizers. I’m responsible for hydraulic and instrumentation tubing applications in many market niches.

Q – Why this industry? Why Sandvik?

A – I heard about Sandvik during my first semester at the university and I was fascinated; I became a real fan of Sandvik. Teachers always highlighted Sandvik as a company that’s dedicated to new developments and innovations while remaining committed to its customers.

I was extremely happy to be interviewed for an internship. Besides being a company with all the qualities above, I had the chance to work with stainless steels and special alloys for corrosive applications. Both subjects were class modules that I really appreciated during my time at university. Sandvik has always been a company that I have admired and I’m so happy to be a part of the team. After graduation, Sandvik became my everyday school.

Q – Can you tell us about your recent award win for your poster?

A – My final graduation project was developed based on a Sandvik case study using stainless steel applied specific steel mill application. The mill’s recuperator had been experiencing tubing failures during its operation. Several materials were included in the manufacturing of this equipment, and I studied how phase precipitation (chromium-rich carbides and sigma phase) could affect the material’s behavior. The study was carried out using thermo-Calc® and DICTRA® software, which allowed predicting phase transformations from thermodynamic calculations. The advantages of using a computer simulation include cost reductions for the company and fast results from checking a material’s performance prior to use. The study would support selecting proper materials based on its phase transformation predictions.

The study about the alloy AISI 442 was sent to the Calphad Global 2021 congress and I was awarded the title of Best Poster.

I was very surprised when I received the award because most of the participants were PhD students and I was still finishing my bachelor’s degree. It was incredible!

Receiving this award proves the professional growth I’ve experienced while being at Sandvik.

Q – Who inspires you?

A – My grandma inspires me. She’s a woman who has overcome obstacles such as taking care of her whole family. She makes her own decisions and is very determined. Despite the difficulties she’s experienced, she never gave up. I admire her journey, fighting for what she really believes in.

Q – What do you do when you’re not at work?

A – When I’m not working, I really like to go out with family and friends. Due to the pandemic, this was greatly reduced but I hope that everything will return to normal soon.

I enjoy traveling with family and friends. In my opinion, discovering new places makes us happier, especially when we’re in good company. I also like to watch movies, series, and read books.

Whenever possible, I try to exercise to find the balance between my daily routine and my health.
