Sandvik’s Material Experts: Meet the Team – Dragon Hao

Meet the team behind our Tube division. In our series, we’ll introduce the faces behind the team and hear their insights on the tubing industry.

In our latest blog, we caught up with Dragon Hao, Technical Marketing Manager in China.

1. Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I have been in this industry since 2007 after I graduated with my master’s degree in material science from the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). I chose this sector to specialize in because it’s a combined subject of chemicals, corrosion, and materials, which means there are many new things to learn all the time. The chemical and energy sector has always interested me because you don’t know which one will be popular in the near future. As a Material Engineer, I have to say, how our clients go through the material selections process is sometimes more interesting to me.

2. What is your role at Sandvik?

I’ve worked for Sandvik for around 10 years, and I've had different roles including, Technical Marketing Specialist, Technical Marketing for North-East Asia. Now I'm the Technical Marketing Manager for China.

My primary responsibilities are new grade promotion, new application development, technical support to sales, maintaining key designer/licenser relationships, specify Sandvik grades, and locking in the technical specifications.

Another key part of my day-to-day job is monitoring the local standardization committee for related production and testing standards to ensure our new grades qualify. I also support customers on specific corrosion issues, failure analysis, material selection, and general welding questions. I’m always trying to help bridge the gap between sales and marketing to help understand how we can add more value to our customers.

3. What do you think is next for the industry, in the next five years?

The chemical industry has its ups and downs. I think government policy, technology trends, innovation from the customer side, and our side will all have significant parts to play in the next five years.

In China, we will be focusing on lower emission, higher efficiency, carbon neutrality, and emission peaks – this is now a request from the Chinese Government for any new projects to apply an environment evaluation. It will become more challenging if an individual hasn't handled the emissions well on a project. Also, I think there will be more encouragement to develop clean energy like solar, hydrogen, and wind.

Giant capacity refinery/PTA/urea plants with lower production costs may also soon replace older plants with higher pollution rates. As the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) period may extend to 4 years, this means that selection of better materials is critical. Safety will also be emphasized in the years to come, and stable material properties will be needed.

4. What does Sandvik bring to the tube industry?

At Sandvik, we don’t just sell materials; we work with customers to solve their problems. For example, we help invent new grades or set a new standard for a particular application or welding solution. We set the new industry standard and offer integrated solutions. We bring value to customers by solving their corrosion problems, working together with their material selection, or supporting failure case studies.

I often receive inquiries about materials selection; most of these questions come from customers that don’t have corrosion labs or corrosion data. We can support customers through understanding the chemical process, previously failed cases and share our knowledge of corrosion and materials that can help them choose the best material for their applications.

5. And finally, what makes you excited to go to work every day?

I chose Sandvik because I admire the company’s innovation and the reputation of its materials. The most exciting thing in my day-to-day is our recently launched grade Sanicro® 35; we have a global team and always share our knowledge and experiences. This project has revealed to me that others can inspire us. It has shown me that I’m never alone. This task is challenging, but it still excites me a lot, and I am eager to see what the future holds.
