Gastech 2021, held in Dubai earlier in September, discussed many hot topics impacting the global gas industry. ‘Leading the Net-Zero Agenda’ was the main theme of the event, and among the issues discussed were:
- The need for organizations to work across multiple sectors to deliver on their low carbon commitments
- Financing future gas projects during the transition to Net Zero
- Integrating hydrogen into the existing energy ecosystem
- How technology can drive the Net-Zero agenda
As an exhibitor at Gastech 2021, Sandvik Materials Technology picked up some key insights and takeaways which we’ve shared below.
The rise in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen
Dedicated sessions for hydrogen and alternative gas fuels was a new trend observed at this year’s show, reflecting the market shift towards sources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and others.
Many shipowners and operators are moving towards the greater adoption of gases – whether LNG, propane, or ethane – which are considered transitional fuels. Liquefied hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol also have significant potential.
Methanol significantly reduces sulfur oxide emissions (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. Its ability to be produced from renewable sources offers a pathway to meeting future emissions targets.
At Gastech, there was much focus on hydrogen as an attractive fuel source. It doesn’t release any carbon dioxide (CO2) when burned, and liquefied hydrogen can power vehicles using fuel cell technology.
The trend towards Net-Zero Emissions for LNG assets
This was an important and very interesting topic during the conference. Key speakers emphasized the need to decarbonize all parts of the LNG value chain.
Greater electrification and integration with renewable sources provide an excellent opportunity for LNG assets to achieve their net-zero emissions (NZE) ambition.
Supporting the LNG market
LNG producers require solutions that deliver lasting performance and are proven to outperform current materials in corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and weldability.
With excellent resistance to highly corrosive conditions, Sanicro® 23 and Sanicro® 35 substantially improve heat exchanger lifespan and productivity.
Designed for service in aggressive corrosive environments, Sanicro® 35 bridges the gaps between standard duplex or austenitic grades and nickel alloys.
Sanicro®23 offers excellent resistance to highly corrosive conditions, making it ideally suited for LNG cryogenic seawater vaporizer tubing. It is part of a new family of super-austenitic (highly alloyed) stainless steels with 6-7% molybdenum.
The effect of the pandemic on face-to-face events
Enhanced health and safety measures were in place for a safe event, and wearing a mask was mandatory on all occasions.
For Sandvik Tube EMEA, this was the first live event we had attended in more than 18 months. Meeting colleagues and clients face to face again, networking, and showcasing our new products and solutions was a special feeling.
We featured new materials at this year's exhibition, including Sanicro® 23, our super-austenitic alloy Sanicro® 35, and our range of hydraulic and instrumentation and heat exchanger products. Many interesting discussions took place, and the event exceeded expectations.
