Q- Can you tell us more about yourself?

A – I’m 71 years old, I still live in my Archbald, Pennsylvania and I’ve been married 52 years. I have two children (my son is 49 and my daughter is 46), three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Other than work, I enjoy hunting, riding my motorbike, and volunteering for Archbald Ambulance and Rescue Squad, which I’ve been doing for 25 years now.

Q - Tell us about your journey at Sandvik – what roles have you had?

A – Before Sandvik Materials Technology, I had my first job at 15 and from there I went on to do some welding and mechanics jobs. My journey began when I started working in February of 1972. I was hired as a General Operator and since then I have worked on all the machines in the plant; I’ve worked as a Crane Lead and drove forklifts, but most of my years were spent as a Pilger Operator. I always liked helping my colleagues in other departments as well as my own.

Now I’m an MSO Skilled Operator which is similar to my previous jobs. I enjoy it because I am always doing something and constantly moving. I often train new people on the forklifts, show them around, and do other training with them when they come on-site.

I have stayed for all these years because working here gave me the ability to build a new home and raise my family without the worry of layoffs. It’s been a good job for me over the past 50 years.

Q - What does Sandvik bring to the industry?

A – I think that Sandvik is very well known in the industry for creating good, reliable materials and products. Sandvik Materials Technology has a reputation for being reliable and consistent and that’s why I think customers come back again and again.

Q - Do you have a favorite memory from your career at Sandvik?

A – I have many memories over the last 50 years; I’ve met many people who have become some of my best friends. The memory that stands out to me the most is my trip to England and Sweden in 1990. They took some of us over to see how these sites worked. I learned more about how the steel was made, the different grades, and how they melted the steel down. It was a great experience - a week wasn’t long enough. I have enjoyed my time at Sandvik and I have no plans to retire, I will be working here as long as I can!

Q - Do you have any tips for someone starting their career in Sandvik?

A - Keep your head down, work hard and learn as much as you can, and you will get on just fine!

From everyone here at Sandvik Materials Technology, we would like to thank Frank Goodwin for his 50 years of service!
