Choosing the right material for components can be difficult if the application requires more than just a standard stainless steel. Today there are hundreds of stainless alloys to consider, along with other high-performance materials such as nickel alloys, titanium and zirconium. They all have different material properties with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Ideally, the conditions and requirements are known, but for existing applications failure analysis may be useful to determine whether problems are related to material properties and to give input to materials selection. In other cases, it may be useful to test and evaluate small material samples such as corrosion coupons in the environment.
